Ten (Tongue-in-Cheek) Reasons for Non-Readers to Own a Private Library
Everyone should have elaborate bookshelves at home. Those who love reading need not be told this. But those who have little interest in books should also build private libraries. Here are 10 good (tongue-in-cheek) reasons to; an extra one has been thrown in as a bonus.
1. Books make your interiors look charming.
2. It is cheaper to build a library than invest in other décor like sculpture, paintings, artificial flowers, artefacts etc.
3. You look rich. Notice the bookshelves in most television shows and movies showing homes of the wealthy.
4. It sounds classy when you invite someone to your ‘library’ or say you are sitting in one.
5. You feel a sense of inner satisfaction when buying books — the words within will find their way into your soul through osmosis just by their proximity.
6. You can pick a book and pretend to read when you don’t want to make conversation with family or guests.
7. You can pull out a book and recommend your guests read the same should you not want to socialise with them.
8. For the altruism. Your purchases enable literature to thrive for the sake of those who seek good books.
9. Since the books are likely to stay in mint condition, you can pull one out when you need a gift at short notice.
10. The sight of books can be therapeutic just like looking at greenery or blue skies.
Bonus Reason #11: The presence of books might tempt you to try some — making a reader of you.
Here’s a word to expand your vocabulary: Tsundoku. It refers to those who keep acquiring books but rarely read most of their purchases. Sounds like someone you know?
